The Truth About Finland
Helsinki, Kallio Kunsthalle, exhibition 2–23 June 2017
Pori, exhibition 8–16 July 2017
In 2017 Finland celebrates its 100th anniversary of independence. Porin kulttuurisäätö collective joins the grandiose celebration by inviting one hundred artists and researchers to present their visions and truths about Finland today. Instead of embellished images of birches, lakes and saunas, The Truth About Finland wants to question the constructed conception of Finland as united welfare state with no frictions and discords.
Art is the most useful tool in the process of creating national identities. In the early years of the independent Finland, artists and historians worked together aiming to reconstruct Finland - its past and future. From present perspective the outcome can often be seen strange, confusing or even violent. The Truth About Finland explores these disconcerting representations and updates our understanding about Finland by the intersubjective voice of the multinational and interdisciplinary group of the participating artist and researches. One aim of the project is also to challenge the whitewashed representations of Finland, promoted by the official centenary programme and give space for discrepancy and diversity.
Despite the critical questions, the anniversary deserves a worthy exhibition - a platform for artists and researchers to disclose their visions and thoughts where new updated ideas and notions of our present time can be made.
The project is divided in three parts. The Truth about Finland starts in June with an exhibition including performative approaches, lectures and workshops in Kallio Kunsthalle Helsinki. For this part Porin kulttuurisäätö will join forces with historian Miika Tervonen, Nynnyt (Hanna Ohtonen & Selina Väliheikki), HONKASALO-NIEMI-VIRTANEN collective and artist Erno-Erik Raitanen. In July the hundred views on today’s Finland will be exhibited in a temporary exhibition space located in Pori city center. The Truth about Finland publication, the third part of the project, brings together the two exhibitions, texts by the exhibition group of Kallio Kunsthalle and opening words by Porin kulttuurisäätö.
